Canadian Contributions to the Manhattan Project and Early Nuclear Research

چکیده
During the Second World War, Canada made several important contributions to wartime nuclear research efforts. The three main were: establishing a domestic laboratory in Montreal investigate heavy water reactor; creating supply chains provide uranium oxide, water, and polonium Manhattan Project; direct of Canadians living United States project. These efforts helped establish legacy that has persisted present day.

The early development of neutron diffraction: science in the wings of the Manhattan Project
Although neutron diffraction was first observed using radioactive decay sources shortly after the discovery of the neutron, it was only with the availability of higher intensity neutron beams from the first nuclear reactors, constructed as part of the Manhattan Project, that systematic investigation of Bragg scattering became possible. Remarkably, at a time when the war effort was singularly fo...
متن کاملFour Canadian Contributions to Stochastic Modeling
We outline the history, significance, and impact of four important contributions by Canadian researchers to stochastic modeling for operational research: the use of the uniformization method to compute transient probabilities for Markov chains, pioneered by Winfried K. Grassmann, contributions to Markov decision processes by Martin L. Puterman, contributions to the development of random number ...

As the proportion of the population over age 65 increases in Western countries, the burden of can cer and other chronic diseases is also increasing. If advances in preventing these diseases are to be realized, bet ter information is needed about their causes and the antecedents of the causes. For example, although it is known that many sporadic cancers are caused by a combination of lifestyle...
متن کاملA research pilot project to test the efficacy of current pedorthic practices in the Canadian Forces.
Impact loading is a major factor in the high prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries among military personnel during operational tasks. One of the therapeutic purposes of a pedorthic approach is to attenuate impact load through footwear and supportive device cushioning. The following research pilot project attempts to investigate this relationship. Vertical acceleration was collected at the four...
